Free Block of the Month pattern -

June ushers in the final block in the twelve block series of free patterns for the Bulding Blocks quilt. We'll keep the block and quilt layout patterns available until September when we'll unveil patterns for our new BOM quilt, Galactic Explosion.

We're also going to again try something a little different, just to mix things up a bit! Galactic Explosion (87" x 87") will feature commercially printed fabric rather than hand dyes which have been showcased in our last four BOM quilts. We're also going to offer patterns & kits in two different colorways--a warm and a cool colo rway--so that you can make one or both either using our kits or fabrics from your own stash.

Children play with a variety of building and construction toys from Lincoln Logs to Legos. The free play that children enjoy by experimenting and creating with the various parts of any set of construction toys helps them develop spatial awareness, problem solving, and creativity.

Building Blocks (69” X 84”), a twelve block sampler quilt made with ten coordinating fabrics and one background fabric, celebrates the construction toys children play with. Each of the 12” blocks in this quilt is named after a different type of construction toy. Although there are many more toys than the twelve named in this block-of-the-month quilt, those I’ve selected are some that bring back fond memories of my own childhood (Tinkertoys and Lincoln Logs) and others that I learned about in assembling this project (K’Nex and Zoomorphs). There are a lot of fascinating and fun construction toys available for children—you may want to look into them!

The quilt shown uses 10 hand dyed fabrics and a cream solid for the background. All of the basic shapes—the building blocks of this quilt—are listed in the first installment, Fabric Requirements and Cutting. You will need this guide for cutting the pieces of each block, each month.

Also, this BOM is a bit different from the others we have offered. Each month’s directions and kits will have the cutting and sewing for one block, plus the cutting for some of the border and setting pieces. By the time you get to the last block, you will have virtually all the quilt pieces cut out and ready to assemble. You will truly build this quilt as you go!
